Work will resume on the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace this week following the tragic death of a worker earlier in the month.
Emergency services were called to the construction site on the New England Highway, Tarro, about 11.50pm on Thursday 6 November.
Details emerged the man was standing behind a parked truck when he was allegedly struck by a material transfer vehicle.
SafeWork NSW and police are continuing to investigate the incident.
However, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) indicated the project would proceed from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday; 8am to 5pm on Saturday; and from 7pm to 5am Monday to Friday.
The work will also require lane closures with intermittent stoppages and temporary speed reductions to 40km/h at the following locations and times:
From 7pm to 5am, Monday 17 November until Friday 21 November
- M1 Pacific Motorway at Beresfield and Black Hill
- John Renshaw Drive at Beresfield
- New England Highway at Tarro
- Old Punt Road at Tomago
- Pacific Highway at Tomago and Heatherbrae
From 5am to 7pm, Monday 17 November until Friday 21 November
- Lenaghans Drive at Black Hill
- Old Punt Road at Tomago
- New England Highway Eastbound at Tarro
Operators of over-size and/or over-mass (OSOM) vehicles with a ground contact wider than 3.2 metres or with overall width greater than 4.5 metres are advised to contact the team on 0423 323 946 at least one day ahead of proposed movement.
Significant delays can occur if they fail to do so.
Hexham Straight Widening project
Changed traffic conditions are slated to progress work on the Hexham Straight Widening project.
- Lane closures and a temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place on the southbound lanes of Maitland Road, located north of Old Maitland Road to Ironbark Creek bridge on Monday 17 November
- Lane closures and a temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place on both the northbound and southbound lanes of Maitland Road, located from Sparke Street to Old Maitland Road (east), until Thursday 20 November
- Lane closures and a temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place on the southbound lanes of Maitland Road, located between Old Maitland Road (west) and north of the Oak Precinct, until Thursday 20 November
- Lane closures and a temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place on the northbound lanes of Maitland Road, located from Old Maitland Road (east) to Old Maitland Road (west), until Thursday 20 November.
Major work continues on the remainder of the project from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday; 7pm to 7am Sunday to Thursday; and from 8am to 1pm on Saturday.
Newcastle Inner City Bypass, Jesmond and New Lambton Heights
Motorists are advised of ongoing changed overnight traffic conditions at the Newcastle Inner City Bypass interchanges at Jesmond and New Lambton Heights.
Kerb, drainage and median work as well as sign installation and removal will be carried out around the northern interchange.
To minimise any impacts, it’ll take place at night, Sunday to Thursday from 7pm to 5am, weather permitting.
- From Monday 17 November, for up to three nights, single lane closures of both eastbound and westbound lanes on Newcastle Road, Jesmond, between Drury Street and Robinson Avenue
- From Monday 17 November, for up to one night, single lane closure of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass, Jesmond southbound off-ramp
- From Thursday 20 November, for up to one night, single lane closure of both eastbound and westbound Newcastle Inner City Bypass, Jesmond northbound on-ramp.
Operators of OSOM vehicles with a ground contact wider than 3.2m or with overall width greater than 4.5m travelling through the northern interchange at Jesmond are advised to contact the team at least one day ahead of movement on 1800 818 433.
Significant delays will occur if they fail to do so.
Work is also continuing at the southern interchange, including barrier installation along Lookout Road and at the signalised intersection of Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive.
That’s planned for Wednesday 19 November between 7pm and 5am.
To carry it out, there will be changed overnight traffic conditions, with single lane closure on the northbound lanes of Lookout Road between Grandview and Ridgeway Roads and at the intersection of McCaffrey Drive.
New England Highway/Maitland Road, Tarro
Crews will remove an overhead sign gantry on the New England Highway/Maitland Road at Tarro on Monday 17 November and Tuesday 18 November from 7pm to 4am.
Traffic control, lane closures, alternating stop/slow and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h are slated for the safety of workers and motorists.
Complete closure of both carriageways will be in place for 20 minutes at midnight during the lifting of the gantry.
Cormorant Road, Kooragang
Maintenance is scheduled on Cormorant Road near Egret Street, Kooragang.
City of Newcastle (CN) will carry out the work on behalf of TfNSW, which includes asphalt resurfacing, on Tuesday 18 November and Wednesday 19 November from 7pm to 5am.
It’ll take place in two stages:
- Stage one: Egret Street will be closed to all traffic at Cormorant Road. Westbound traffic on Cormorant Road heading to Egret Street will be detoured via Teal and Raven streets to reach Egret Street. Southbound traffic on Egret Street will detour east via Raven Street then use Teal Street to return to Cormorant Road
- Stage two: There will be no right-hand turns from Cormorant Road to Egret Street. Motorists will continue along Cormorant Road and detour onto Windmill Road to make a U-turn, then rejoin Cormorant Road to turn left onto Egret Street
Traffic control, lane closures, alternating stop/slow and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h is in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
Operators of OSOM vehicles are advised to contact the project team on UHF channel 19 to be escorted through the site.
