North Rothbury could soon be home to a second large-scale shopping centre, as a major corporation seeks approval for a multi-million-dollar development.
Woolworths Group has applied to build a large retail space in the rapidly-growing town of Huntlee, estimated to cost upwards of $58 million.
The complex will feature a large grocery store from the chain, a liquor outlet, seven specialty outlets, a kiosk, and two other commercial premises.
Submitted by Fabcot Pty Ltd, the property development arm of Woolworths Group, the project will be put before Cessnock City Council and undergo a public submission period before construction can begin.
Cessnock City mayor Dan Watton told the Newcastle Weekly that because the expected cost of the development was more than $30 million, the Joint Regional Planning Panel would assess it and make a final determination.
Located across from the Coles complex and Huntlee Tavern, the proposal is one of several new pitches, with groundworks for a new high school to begin close by.
Cr Watton hailed the retail project, emphasising its importance for the area.
“Council welcomes applications like this, which aim to support the growth of the local community,” he said.
“The interest of commercial operators in the area reflects increased demand from a growing community, while providing local jobs, hospitality and convenience.
“It is another clear sign that big business has confidence in investing in our great LGA.
“Developments like this have the potential to significantly boost local employment opportunities on a long-term basis, as well as during the construction phase.”
According to the 2021 Census, the Huntlee population grew from 900 to 2,300 in just five years.
“The North Rothbury/Huntlee area has convenient access to services, close proximity to the Hunter Expressway, natural amenities and is a stone’s throw from the Hunter’s wine country – all benefits which are driving growth across the Cessnock LGA,” Cr Watton said.
