Wood, Gillies, Brown unite for comedic tour de farce

An all-star line-up of John Wood, Max Gillies and Noeline Brown will bring the comedy hit, Mono, to the Newcastle Civic Theatre next month.

The first national tour of the performance – which arrives in the Hunter on Thursday 3 February at 2pm and 7.30pm – is a tour de farce from three of Australia’s best loved actors.

In fact, Wood (Blue Heelers), Gillies (The Gillies Report) and Brown (The Naked Vicar Show) comprise the entire cast of Mono, the new classic by Angus FitzSimons (Senior Moments).

It’s a comedy revue play in the tradition of Joyce Grenfell, Alan Bennett and Bob Newhart; with nine brilliant comic characters brought to life through hysterical monologues in 90 minutes of fun and laughter.

What is Mono about?

It focuses on a hectoring Headmistress, a bad Bush Poet, a puzzled Policeman, a meandering Minister, a chaotic Conductor, a mindless “Mindfulness” teacher, a surreal Sotheby’s Auctioneer and a very, very sozzled Mother of the Bride.

“I think we could all do with a laugh at the moment,” Wood said.

“That’s why I watch Fawlty Towers after rehearsals for Mono are thankfully over.”

“It is an honour to be asked to do King Lear for the Bell Shakespeare Company,” Gillies added.

“But, they didn’t ask, so I’m doing Mono.”

Brown also showed she’d lost none of her quick wit either.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to perform together individually with Max and John,” she said.

“I also still dream about sitting my final Latin exam and realising I have forgotten to wear clothes, but this has nothing to do with promoting Mono.”

Producer FitzSimons said it was a privilege to have these three legends as the cast.

“John, Max and Noeline are household names and also recognised in flats,” he quipped.
