Woman dies in New England Highway crash

A man has been charged following a fatal crash near Greta that claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman earlier this week.

Emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Harpers Hill about 8.50am on Monday, 20 July, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Police were told a hatchback and a utility collided head-on, blocking both directions of the highway.

The woman driving the hatchback was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died before she could be transported to hospital.

The driver of the utility, a 21-year-old man, allegedly left the scene on foot before being arrested by police nearby a short time later.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene while the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene and launched an investigation.

Police returned to the hospital on Tuesday, 21 July, where they charged the man with five offences.

The charges include dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, negligent driving, failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death, and not keeping left of the dividing line.

The 21-year-old was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday, 22 July.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
