A 32-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly setting her own house on fire in Mirrabooka at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Mooranga Road in the Lake Macquarie suburb about 10.40pm on Sunday 17 August.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews attended the site and extinguished the blaze.

“On arrival, crews were faced with a two-storey structure with threats to neighbouring properties which were dealt with swiftly,” a Peninsula Rural Fire Brigade spokesperson said.

But, despite their best efforts, the house was destroyed.

The sole occupant of the home was able to evacuate free of injury.

She was arrested at the scene by officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District and taken to Toronto Police Station.

There, she was charged with damage property by fire/explosion more than $15,000.

The woman was refused bail and will appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Monday 18 August.

The cause of the fire still remains unknown, with inquiries continuing at the hands of specialist Fire Investigators.
