FRIDAY 10 March 

What’s On: Friday Night Foodies at Speers Point Park.

Sean Thomas Bell is hosting a solo exhibition at Suspension Espresso in Islington from 6pm to 8pm with 100% of the proceeds going to the Children’s Cancer Institute. THESE VIEWS ARE OURS is a series of observational sketches that include treks throughout Europe from 2019, and parts of east coast Australia from 2020 to the present. The art will be a range of acrylic paintings on canvas and timber boards. Sean’s art is featured on many streetscapes, cafes, and resorts throughout the Hunter and further afield. 

Friday night Foodies is sure to be gnarly this week as 80’s Skaties and Newcastle Roller Derby joins the party. From 4pm to 8pm everyone is welcome to get their skates on and roll around Speers Point Park in celebration of Lake Mac’s Women in Sport Festival.

What’s On: Potluck Party Pai Ti Kong with the Ghosts at Maitland Regional Art Gallery

Potluck Party Pai Ti Kong with the Ghosts is a free exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery featuring the reflections of local artist Jayanto on a family tradition of offering food made by his mother. 

SATURDAY 11 March 

Newcastle 500 Supercars will include free Family Fun Day activities on both Saturday and Sunday. At Newcastle Museum Forecourt the Newy Car Club will display some of its finest vehicles between 8am and 5pm. At Civic Park from 11am to 3pm activities will include a free Toddler Messy Play Station, jumbo slide, facepainting, teen art workshops, music and entertainment, food trucks, and a silent disco. 

Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival has its own line-up of activities across the weekend, including Women’s Rugby 7s at Lake Macquarie Rugby Club, Speers Point, from 7am to 6pm, Glenrock Beginner Funduro at Hunter School MTB from 10am to noon, a Lake Mac Women in Sport Exhibition in Charlestown Square from 1pm to 3pm, Lake Mac PRO-AM Tennis Evening by Tennis NSW from 5.30pm to 9pm at Tennis Central, Belmont and free come-and-try classes at Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centres.  

What’s On: Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival 2023

Lambton Library will be home to Newcastle Repair Café on Saturday from 9.30am to noon. Bring your much-loved broken items including small furniture, small hand tools, clothing, and bikes, and a team of handy volunteers will mend it and teach upcycling skills in the process. This event will also include a plant/seed swap supported by Newcastle Seed Library volunteers.  

Newcastle Fringe Festival is hosting a series of activities in upcoming weeks, including The Ocean Enters the Room at Brunker Community Theatre this Saturday from 7.30pm. This unique event explores how sound can be used effectively in meditation. The show will feature improvised projection, the sounds of cello, guitar and bass flute, with the intention to encourage subtle unbound dream states. 

SUNDAY 12 March 

Lake Mac Women in Sport 2023 will wind up with its final activity – Hunter Volleyball Spike Fest – to be held on Sunday from 9.30am to 3.30pm at Hunter Sports HS, Pacific Highway Gateshead. 

Newcastle Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Club is hosting its Port Stephens SUP Challenge on the weekend at Birub Beach and Shoal Bay Beach. Categories include distances between 3km to 9km, technical and foil.
