What’s On the Weekend (WOW): 3 to 5 March, 2023


Yes, it’s autumn, but that doesn’t mean its time to hibernate – just yet. Get out and enjoy the warm nights while we have them, soak up a sunset, eat outdoors and play like a child for another weekend.

FRIDAY 3 March 

The 2023 Newcastle Show returns to Newcastle Showground from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 March. Spanning three days, visitors will be treated to an action-packed lineup of entertainment, animal displays, competitions, educational workshops and activations, plus rides, showbags, fashion shows, food and fireworks. 

Friday night foodies is on again at the Multi-Arts Pavilion (MAP) mima, Speers Point Park from 5pm to 8pm. Food trucks, live music and Friday night vibes await the whole family. 

A little further along the lake the Warners Bay Foreshore will be home to Music in the Podium from 6pm to 9pm. The free, family-friendly event will include live music to be enjoyed as the sun sets over Lake Macquarie. 

Cinema Under the Stars

Maitland Repertory Theatre presents ‘And then there were None’ by Agatha Christie on Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to 10pm and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. 

Cinema Under the Stars – a great way to kickstart your weekend with the screening of Sing 2 at Maitland Showground from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Saturday 4 March 

Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival has an itinerary filled with activities designed to celebrate women of all ages keeping physically active. Kicking off on Saturday from 9am the festival will run until Sunday 12 March and include everything from come-and-try sports for newcomers to words of wisdom from accomplished professional athletes. The annual event will officially launch with a breakfast event hosted by Tennis star Jelena Dokic on Monday 6 March. 

The Olive Tree Market will be launching its first market for 2023. Marking the start of its 15th year of business. Newcastle’s Civic Park is expected to come alive between 9am and 2pm when the popular outdoor market hosts a curated line-up of more than 120 stalls featuring emerging and established artists, designers, makers and food producers, as well as live music and food stalls. 

Newcastle Jets A-League Women will take on Melbourne City at Number 2 Sportsground on Smith Street from 3pm to 6pm. Enjoy an afternoon out with the family with Modus on site, a sausage sizzle, kids on the field after the game and, of course, kids U13 go free to every Newcastle Jets home game this season. 

Mitch Revs Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition by Amy Charlton ‘Life with Bubbles’ opening night from 4pm. The free event includes original artworks, drinks, nibbles and merchandise. 

Cinema Under the Stars is offering a way to wind down the perfect Saturday when it screens Sing 2 at Speers Point Park on Saturday from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Sunday 5 March 

Clean Up Australia Day – There are plenty of opportunities to give your community an ‘autumn clean’ by filling up a bag of rubbish this Sunday. Check out the website for locations near you and get cleaning from 7am to 5pm.
