SHARE

Get a spring in your step, get some fresh air and get out-and-about this weekend with seven of our best things to do.

Get historical

Lake Macquarie is wrapping up its History Illuminated event this weekend with a number of sessions that celebrate the region’s past.

From walking tours to photographic exhibitions, guest speakers, films and books, an array of learning is on offer for all ages from Friday morning to Sunday evening at suburbs surrounding the lake.

Get walking

Take on the challenge of walking 35 kilometres to raise funds for people living with mitochondrial disease (Mito) this Sunday by signing up for the Bloody Long Walk. Starting at Barton field in Belmont at 6.30am, walkers will trek along the Fernleigh Track, past Merewether via the Yuelarbah Track, along the Newcastle Memorial Walk to Pacific Park at Newcastle Beach.

Get thinking

If you’re up for a challenge that will help some children in need then head to East Maitland Bowling Club for a Trivia Night on Saturday. Early Links is hosting its inaugural trivia fundraiser to raise funds for its playgroups in Maitland and Muswellbrook, supporting children with additional needs. The evening activities will run from 6.30pm to 11pm and feature a silent auction, raffle prizes and a door prize that include wine tasting experiences, spa vouchers, theatre tickets, paintball, a whale watching cruise, dining vouchers, and rock-climbing passes. Tickets are $25/adult.

Get planting

Maitland City Council is hosting its Biodiversity Month Planting Day event at Watervale Circuit in Chisholm from 9am to noon on Saturday. The hope is to plant 400 native trees and shrubs encouraging regeneration of the area. Gardening tools will be supplied and all participants will be given seedlings to take home after the event.

Preparations are firmly in place for Newcastle to host its first dedicated gin festival later in the year.

Get tasting

The city’s inaugural Gin Event will be held in the grounds of Newcastle’s Historic Museum, showcasing hand-crafted gins from 12 specially curated distilleries, paired with Strange Love Tonic and Soda. With its English Garden Party theme, ticketed guests are encouraged to dress accordingly for the two sessions 11am-3pm and 4pm-8.30pm. High Tea and Charcuterie will be provided by Nagisa, Cake Boi, Italy’s Pantry, Popollo and Cheifly Sandwiches.

Library 2U

Wallsend Library is playing host to a Young Adults Book Bingo on Saturday from 11am to noon. The free event is suitable for teens and adult bookworms of all ages. Contact the library for more details.
