What’s On: Seven things to do in the Hunter this weekend

There is something in the Hunter to satisfy every one of your five senses this weekend; from the sounds that will emanate from music halls, churches, and markets, to the smell of fresh coffee and chocolate. Here’s our top tips to help you laugh, paint, sip and skate your way through another August weekend.

Musicians will perform a stripped back version of Beethoven’s Eroica in Lake Macquarie this weekend.

Music:

Music-lovers will be spoiled for choice this weekend as the region hosts some world-class names.

On Friday, Newcastle-based community women’s choir The Song Sisters will be performing at St Mary’s Maitland from 6pm to 8pm.

The choir seeks to support women in singing for enjoyment, friendship, health, and wellbeing.

The evening will begin with wine and cheese and the concert will commence with the choir under the guidance of musical director, Kim Sutherland OAM.

Wrapping up its final winter weekend, the annual Newcastle Music Festival promises to entertain with events that stretch across the three days.

On Friday, Adamstown Arts at Adamstown Uniting Church will be home to the great music of Bach, Rachmaninov and Fiddes as Teije Hylkema and Grace Kim present Rachmaninov with a Cello from 7.30pm.

On Saturday Christ Church Cathedral is set to come alive with the sounds of Australian music legend Grace Knight when she joins the Christ Church Camerata Quartet on stage from 7.30pm.

The festival will conclude with Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez from 2.30pm on Sunday.

Lake Macquarie will host its own internationally-renowned sounds when it welcomes Australian Haydn Ensemble to perform Beethoven’s Eroica with an intimate orchestra on Saturday.

The world-class outfit, which has played on stages across the globe, is touring regional NSW performing at eight different locations, with some already sold out.

The two-hour performance will be held at Rathmines Theatre from 3pm, with light snacks and drinks available in the courtyard from 1pm.

Beethoven’s Eroica is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.

At the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre ticketholders will enjoy the sounds of soprano Mirusia as she performs ‘Songbird – A Life in Song’ from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Comedy:

Kick-start your weekend with a few laughs in the city as Civic Theatre Newcastle & Big Dog Comedy present the first of their monthly comedy nights on Friday.

Join Triple J’s Dave Woodhead, Alex Jae,Cam James and many more funny favourites as they serve up a smorgasbord of laughs from 8pm.

Shows run for 1 hour 30 minutes including interval time.

Made & Found Markets, Redhead

Markets:

The Hunter will once again showcase the talents of some of its most creative when it hosts an array of markets across the weekend.

On Saturday, Newcastle’s Homegrown Markets will fill The Station with stalls from 10am to 2pm.

Then, on Sunday, Beach Road in Redhead will be home to Made & Found Market from 10am to 2pm.

Handmade, vintage, and preloved goods, clothing and accessories will be on offer together with fresh food, coffee and live music to help you support local while you shop up a storm.

If you’re heading to the valley, check out Handmade in the Hunter Markets on Sunday.

From 9am to 2pm Sobels Wines in Pokolbin will be home to the longest-running meet-the-maker markets in the vineyards, offering homegrown, handmade arts and crafts, food, coffee and of course wine.

Crime:

For those who love history and crime, the Maitland Gaol is hosting the first of its Crimes of Passion tours on Saturday from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Listen to a series of stories that began with passion and ended in incarceration.

Focusing on local crimes, the stories will shock and horrify as love, suspicion, greed and envy entwine and almost inevitably end in a brutal crime.

Night tours are $36 and are not recommended for those aged under 15.

Get arty:

Sunday Sessions at MAC are returning to the grounds of the Mureum of Art and Culture in Booragul.

From 1pm to 3pm visitors are invited to grab a wine or beer and enjoy some local music and artmaking.

This week $20 will get you a cheese platter and art materials together with live music from Paul Watters and an art tutorial by Glass Suncatcher.

Taste:

Maitland is hosting its annual Aroma Coffee and Chocolate Festival this weekend.

Talented chocolatiers and baristas will join winemakers in showcasing the best the region has to offer in a two-day festival designed to tantalise winter tastebuds.

Visitors to the Riverside Carpark can enjoy the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans, rich melted chocolate, and delectable red wines, served up with a program that includes gourmet food, artisan market stalls and kids’ activities.

Skate:

Newcastle has been synonymous with skateboarding since 1985 when it boasted its own scene including shredding and ripping simultaneously while on a skateboard, surfboard or snowboard.

Shralp is a free exhibition exploring Newcastle’s skateboarding subculture from then till now in photography, magazine covers, skateboard decks and other items, curated by local skateboarder and academic James Turvey.

Hosted by Newcastle Museum the exhibition highlights the significant role Newcastle played in the history of Australian skateboarding, and celebrates local skating identities who found national and international success.

The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday and runs through until 30 August.
