“What the community wants”

Alternative plans for a prime waterfront site at Toronto have been floated by independent Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper.

Landscaped gardens and playgrounds, barbecue areas, seating and space for festivals, pop-up markets and cafés are prominent features of the concept illustrations, which Mr Piper commissioned to show Lake Macquarie council what could be.

Currently under the council’s consideration is a plan for a six-storey mixed-use development at the Bath Street site, next to the Royal Motor Yacht Club.

The plan has been met with significant community opposition since it was unveiled last year.

“I do not support the council’s plans either,” Mr Piper said. “I don’t believe the councillors have properly considered other options for Bath Street and I’ve become increasingly concerned that they’re not listening to the local residents.

“[The concept illustrations are] more in step with what the community wants and needs. If a six-storey development is built on this site, the land is lost to the community forever.”
