Wet weather forces NHRL to abandon weekend round

SHARE

The weather gods are throwing sporting fixtures into disarray, with Newcastle Hunter Rugby League (NHRL) abandoning round six this weekend.

While Newcastle Rugby League (NEWRL) is slated to go ahead, with the Denton Engineering Cup grand final replay between Maitland Pickers and Central Newcastle Butcher Boys programmed for Sunday 25 May, the NRHL board has decided to err on the side of caution.

All matches in the men’s competitions – from A to D grade – and ladies league tag games will be rescheduled.

“We’ve worked tirelessly this week to ensure our fixtures could be played,” secretary Nathan Errington said.

“Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, this weekend’s round will not go ahead.

“It’ll now be moved to the second washout weekend in August.

“An email has been sent to all clubs with further details.

“If sides already have matches scheduled for that weekend, we ask you to begin discussions with your opposition to arrange mid-week catch-up games.

“All outstanding fixtures must be completed by mid-July.

“We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to the clubs that volunteered to host games and to the NSWRL staff for working alongside the board to develop alternate schedules.

“We were committed to making rugby league happen this weekend.

“So, this decision was not made lightly.

“Stay safe this weekend… and the NHRL sends its thoughts to those affected by the floods.”

Meanwhile, NEWRL is expected to proceed as per the draw.
