Weston Bears FC’s dream of boasting one of the best sporting facilities in the region is set to become a reality.
After securing $3 million from the Australian Government earlier in the year, Cessnock City Council will oversee an upgrade of the organisation’s playing venue throughout 2025.
It includes the refurbishment of the grandstand at Weston Bears Park, as well as the construction of a new clubroom, changerooms and amenities.
The project’s expected to be finished in 2026.
It’s a major coup for the historic club.
Formed in 1907, Weston Bears FC is represented in several levels of competition, including the Northern NSW division of the National Premier League.
Cessnock City mayor Daniel Watton said increasing the participation of women and girls in sport was a major focus of the venture.
Council chipped in the balance of the $6.4 million facility’s overall cost.
“This key infrastructure project will support the club’s existing needs and provide a platform for its future growth,” Cr Watton explained.
“It will create a more welcoming environment for players and spectators alike… and enable the Weston Bears to increase and better support its female base.”
The overhaul should improve comfort and safety, and provide facilities better suited to the community’s needs – including the erection of new changerooms, storage areas and amenities.
As well, the grandstand will be refurbished to feature a canteen, clubroom and a wheelchair-accessible seating area.
In addition, a carpark is being built, complete with enhanced drainage, lighting and landscaping.
“It’s fantastic to see work kicking off on the upgrade to Weston Bears FC’s home ground,” Hunter MP Dan Repacholi said.
“The $3 million investment from the federal government is about backing local sport, supporting grassroots clubs and making sure our community has top-quality facilities for years to come.”
