Thursday 22nd June marks winter solstice – the day of the year with the least amount of sunlight.
Sure, there’s still 24 hours today, but of all the 365 days of 2023, this one will shy away from the sun the most.
The number of daylight hours you experience on the winter solstice depends on on your latitude.
In the Hunter region we’ll experience sunrise at 7am and sunset at 4.53pm.
It’s nearing the middle of winter and Earth is at its furthest point from the sun.
You could say tonight will be the longest night of the year across Australia.
The good news is from here the days will gradually become longer as we head back towards Spring.
Don’t get too excited, we’ve got a few more colder days ahead before we start warming up again, but if you convince yourself you’re sure to feel that extra minute of sunshine each day.
From Thursday, each day’s total sunlight hours will get a fraction longer than the previous day until we reach summer solstice on December 22.
