Waste Management Facility to reopen after week-long blaze

SHARE

Following extensive remediation works, after a fire, the Singleton Waste Management Facility will reopen next week.

Council crews and NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS) personnel have worked around the clock to control the blaze, which ripped through the tip face on Tuesday 30 December.

They’re now finalising everything to establish a new area for mixed waste disposal at the facility when it resumes operations from 8am on Monday 12 January.

A Singleton Council spokesperson thanked the community for its patience and understanding over the past 10 days.

“All activities have been carried out in line with strict environmental and safety requirements,” she said.

“So, it’s taken a little bit of time… to ensure we safely reopen the facility.

“Meanwhile, kerbside waste collections are continuing as normal.

“Some red bin servicing was delayed due to the additional travel time required for trucks to take waste to facilities outside the Singleton LGA.

“Extra heavy vehicles have been brought in to help crews catch up.

“Residents are encouraged to place bins out as usual and leave them until collected while collections return to schedule.”

However, the recent episode also highlighted a significant issue.

“This incident is an important reminder that batteries, e-waste, gas bottles, chemicals and solvents must never be placed in kerbside bins, as they pose a serious fire risk,” she said.

“These items can be disposed of free of charge at the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) once the Singleton Waste Management Facility reopens or through other approved local providers.”
