Ward boundaries under review

SHARE

When the boundaries of four wards in Newcastle were drawn up 25 years ago, the city was a very different place.

The wards each elect three councillors, plus a popularly elected Lord Mayor, resulting in 13 councillors.

Under the NSW Local Government Act 1993, the total number of electors in each ward must not vary by more than 10% with another ward.

However, Newcastle council stated significant population growth meant several wards no longer met this threshold.

Councillors voted last week to place a proposed ward boundary plan on public exhibition for a 42-day period.

Acting chief executive Ken Liddell said extensive planning had gone into the proposed changes.

“The process of redistributing voters is not a simple one, with a range of factors that need to be considered including natural boundaries, suburb boundaries, Census districts, and future growth projects,” he said.

Under the proposed redistribution, several whole or part suburbs would be moved into different wards. These changes would only be relevant when voting in local government elections.

You can view the proposed ward boundary map online via newcastle.nsw.gov.au or pick up hard copies at the council administration centre and the city’s libraries.

Submissions close at midnight on Thursday 10 October.
