Waratahs pad up for ’round two’

SHARE

It’s “take two” for the Waratah-Mayfield District Cricket Club (WMDCC).

After planning a big weekend of entertainment, laughter and competition late last month, the weather gods had other ideas, with rain interrupting the organisation’s on-field schedule.

The postponed NDCA: NCC T20 Summer Bash clash will now take place against the Uni Sea Dragons, and not Wests, at George Farley Oval, Wallsend, on Sunday 7 February from 10am.

The Tigers and Rosellas are also slated to face-off at the same venue at 2pm.

Then, the club is re-hosting its 23rd annual 7s tournament at Waratah Oval 1 and 3 on Sunday 21 February from 8am onward.

“Thankfully, we can confirm the new date for that popular event,” WMDCC committeeman Jack Dundas said.

“So, we have our fingers crossed for some sun.

“Twelve teams from throughout Newcastle and the Hunter will vie for glory, with the Kurri Vegemites returning to defend their crown.

“It’s a very enjoyable day, for players and spectators alike.

“We’ll contest five-over matches, with modified rules, with a minimum of three pool games for each side who, by the way, dresses up in colourful outfits.

“Unfortunately, the conditions didn’t help us in January.

“Rain washed out the Thursday [night] encounter, which was to be our traditional Sponsors and Old Boys Day.

“And, due to the inclement weather, we were unable to get adequate wickets prepared in time for the ‘sevens’ a few days later.

“So, the boys are finally looking forward to playing the quarter-finals of the T20 Summer Bash this weekend.”

One shining light, however, was the club’s comedy evening, which did go ahead at the Mayfield Hotel.

“It was an outstanding night,” Dundas said.

“I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“To be honest, I can’t explain how amazing the Comedy for a Cause company is to bring local and international talent to community groups.”
