Volunteers set to tackle graffiti

SHARE

Graffiti vandalism costs the state government and residents more than $300 million each year.

An annual Graffiti Removal Day, established in 2012, has saved the community an estimated $10.4 million.

Volunteers are once again ready to roll up their sleeves and take part in the 2019 edition on Sunday 27 October.

Belmont/Lake Macquarie supervisor Pam Wellham, who has been in the role for the past three years, says the event acts as a deterrent.

“In the majority of cases, [graffiti] that has been removed hasn’t reappeared,” she says.

“We’ve got some laneways in Belmont that were cleaned two years ago, and they are still clean.
“With graffiti, the sooner you take it off and keep doing it, then the taggers will give up.

“However, a couple of locations are big and constantly need to be cleaned up.”

Ms Wellham encourages volunteers to sign up and nominate sites around their area that need attention.

Graffiti Removal Day will supply gloves, eye protection and overalls to volunteers, while the site supervisor offers instructions on using removal liquid and paint.

“It doesn’t really take that long – the more people we have, the quicker it is,” Ms Wellham adds.

“We encourage people, wherever they are, to put information into the website and the most appropriate site will then be determined.”

Go to graffitiremovalday.org.au to nominate a site or fill out an application form.

If you have any issues with the website, or further questions, call Ms Wellham on 0437 479 886.
