Vinnies calls for helping hands

If the pandemic has taught Australia anything, it is the importance of community support and having a positive impact on those in need.

Despite the challenges, national charity Vinnies continues to do just that.

Now, people who want to give back to the community are being invited to join its team of volunteers across the Port Stephens, Newcastle and Hunter regions.

“This is our 99th year in NSW serving the community and we couldn’t do it without volunteers,” area manager Bradley Grieve said.

Vinnies operates 237 retail shops throughout NSW which offer a diverse range of pre-loved items for customers to purchase.

Mayfield is one of the stores in desperate need of extra helping hands.

Located on Church Street, after temporarily closing due to the pandemic, the store has reopened with COVIDSafe measures in place.

“We need at least four or five volunteers at Mayfield,” Mr Grieve said.

“We need a van driver and retail volunteers, the retail volunteers don’t have to work in the shop though, we do have a sorting room so people can do anything within their capabilities.

“The commitment is just half a day a week, four hours is the minimum, but most volunteers would do a full day or two.

“Most of our shops within the region, including Belmont, Swansea, Muswellbrook, Scone and Murrurundi are in need of volunteers.”

Vinnies NSW volunteer engagement officer Andrew Green added volunteering was a great way to meet people.

“We have a lovely group of volunteers who have been able to make a positive impact in the local community,” he said.

“For a lot of us, the events of the past year have highlighted the importance of community and looking out for people in need.

“Working in a Vinnies shop is a great chance to meet excellent people and you get the satisfaction that the sales are used to support people who fall on hard times.”

Volunteering requires people to donate a few hours of their time each week to help with roles including customer service, sorting donations, and maintaining the day-to-day running of the shop.
