VIDEO: Spirits light up James Street Plaza

Locals and visitors alike are in for a real treat this month when strolling along the streets of Hamilton.

Hamilton Business Association (HBA), in collaboration with the unique artistry of creative group Curious Legends and with the assistance of Art Thinking, is bringing the Novocastrian essence to life in James Street Plaza for a limited time only.

Spirits of Newcastle will be projected onto the ANZ Bank building, in the precinct, every evening between 8.30pm and 9.30pm until 19 January.

“The project aims to tell the story of Newcastle locals,” Curious Legends curator Mitchell Reese said.

“Artist Conor Fox worked alongside community members, conducting conversations about what Newcastle means to them – the good and the bad.

“The interviewees drew pictures of these two ‘spirits’, which we then turned into animations as part of the final video.”

Hamilton Business Association chair Reece Hignell said it was important to “think outside the square”.

“We wanted to activate this great space with something totally different,” he explained.

“In fact, we have partnered with Art Thinking to assist us with creating some cool activities utilising the projector system on the Clocktower building in 2023.”

Art Thinking is keen to play a pivotal role, too – and bring a fresh approach to the project for the HBA.

“Our partnership with City of Newcastle and the Hamilton Business Association prioritises the local ats community in the development of James Street Plaza’s creative infrastructure,” CEO Kristefan Minski said.

“Curious Legends have provided a culturally relevant and inspiring contribution to this initiative.

“We look forward to working with many more Newcastle-based artists and creatives to expand the platform of possibilities.”

Spirits of Newcastle was first premiered as part of Illuminate in July 2022.
