Newcastle cricket legend Steve Mace is chasing hometown glory at the National Veterans Over 50’s Championships on Thursday.

Regarded as one of the top three players in the world, the Charlestown product will line-up for the NSW Blues in the first division final against Victoria at No. 1 Sportsground on 7 November.

The match caps off an outstanding week for the tournament, staged at various venues throughout the Hunter.

More than 450 players, officials and supporters, representing 30 teams across Australia, have participated in the event – organised by Newcastle Hunter Veterans Cricket and the Newcastle District Cricket Association, enjoying not only high-quality rivalry but also the exceptional facilities and hospitality of the region.

While Mace will be busy stopping Victoria in its tracks, local trio Brendan Briedenhann, Dave Keast and Ian Wood are expected to take the field for the NSW Waratahs against the same opponent in the division two showdown at Passmore Oval.

An all-Queensland affair is scheduled for Waratah Oval.

Meanwhile, the NSW Emus, featuring Jason Lambert, Vincent Nicholls and Garry Pilon, face Scott Boyd’s NSW Kookaburras in the division four encounter at Kahibah Oval, ensuring at least one victory with a Hunter flavour.

Australian opening bowler Phil Melville takes the new ball for the NSW Blues.

“The tournament has been a fantastic showcase for Newcastle,” event director Stephen Leathley said.

“The players have experienced our grounds, our local clubs and the welcoming nature of our people.

“The support from the city and the dedication of the local cricket community has made this event truly special.

“We’re excited to see the finals unfold [today] at some of the best venues in the region, followed by a celebration of all participants, and presentation, at The Station.

“There, we’ll also name the Team of the Tournament.

“Cricket fans are invited to come out and support the teams and witness a thrilling conclusion to the championships.”

The main decider starts from 10am, with entry free to the public.
