The Nappy Collective has launched a nationwide appeal to collect 500,000 nappies by 23 May to ease rising “stress” impacting thousands of Australians.
The Clean Bums for Little Ones campaign is aiming to support 15,000 vulnerable families.
It also marks a significant step toward the charity’s goal of one million nappies donated in 2025.
In Newcastle alone, there are more than 30 local drop-off points, including Baby Bunting, Ripe Maternity and early learning centres.
Now, Hunter businesses and residents are encouraged to donate new or leftover disposable nappies their children may have outgrown or no longer need.
Local volunteer Leanne, who helps with the campaign in the area, said even a few nappies tucked away in a cupboard could make a significant difference.
The Nappy Collective is the only Australian not-for-profit solely focused on redistributing nappies to families in crisis.
Since 2013, it has distributed more than eight million nappies to families escaping domestic violence, facing homelessness or living in severe financial hardship.
The Nappy Collective chief executive officer Sarah Witty said those who had never needed help before were now reaching out.
“For some parents, it comes down to a choice between food for themselves or nappies for their babies and toddlers,” she explained.
“Every donated nappy will help a family in real need.
“So, please get along to a collection point and donate whatever you can.”
Nappy stress affects one-in-10 families in Australia, impacting about 280,000 children under the age of five.
The inability to change nappies frequently can lead to infections, distress and difficulty accessing childcare, while adding enormous emotional and financial strain on parents.
