Upper Hunter inmates help horses trot into new chapter

Hundreds of retired racehorses, and several prison inmates, are now off to a surprising fresh start in life.

And, it’s all thanks to an incredible thoroughbred recovery initiative in the Upper Hunter.

The Racehorse Rehabilitation Program at Muswellbrook’s St Heliers Correctional Centre is no one-trick pony.

While inmates train the horses for rehoming, they take on responsibility for the animals’ daily feeding and welfare.

From grooming to retraining and riding, they learn the ropes – and reins.

In the process, it enables them to gain employment skills, as well as nationally-recognised qualifications, and make strides towards their own rehab, too.

While the concept’s been galloping strong for 15 years, Corrective Services NSW recently renewed its partnership with Racing NSW until 2030.

Commissioner Gary McCahon PSM welcomed the announcement.

“There are currently 10 inmates saddled up to care for about 50 retired racehorses,” he said.

“This initiative is a clear victory for everyone involved.

“The fact it will celebrate two decades of success by the end of this renewed agreement is a true testament to its impact.

“The program delivers benefits on both sides of the fence.

“The horses get a new beginning… and inmates receive opportunities that lead to brighter futures.

“Former participants have gone on to ride high in the racing industry.

“One inmate became an accredited equestrian coach, while another is breaking-in and pre-training racehorses.”

Since its launch in 2011, hundreds of horses have cantered out of the program ready for all variety of new adventures, from joining the NSW Mounted Police, competing in equestrian events, or enjoying life as a recreational riding horse.

For inmates, the hands-on experience isn’t just horseplay, but a chance to gain meaningful careers after release, reducing the risk of reoffending.

When it comes to second chances, the program is leading the field… and will for at least another five years.
