Swansea state MP Yasmin Catley is calling on Transport for NSW to urgently address unsightly median strips in her electorate, labelling them “hazardous” to motorists.

The local member expressed her amazement by the number of areas, which were badly affected.

That, in itself, raised many safety alarms, according to Ms Catley.

“Grass on median strips along the Pacific Highway in Lake Macquarie has grown to dangerous lengths, obscuring drivers’ vision,” she said.

“I understand the recent rain and humid weather has not helped the current situation.

“However, the state of the median strips is drawing ire throughout the community.

“Residents have flagged their concerns over the impact it is having on visibility.

“In some parts, in Lake Macquarie, vehicles in the opposite lane are completely obscured.

“The last thing I want to see, or hear about, is an accident caused by this problem, which could easily be rectified.”

Ms Catley said the responsibility of maintaining the median strips laid with Transport for NSW.

“This issue must be addressed immediately,” she stated.

“Sadly, the state of median strips on the coast is just not acceptable at the moment.

“You only have a look at them at Blacksmiths and Marks Point to witness how bad they are.

“While the weather would have impacted the mowing schedule, we are now in a situation where drivers’ safety is being put at risk due to the lack of visibility of vehicles in the opposite lane.

“Community members are reaching out to me not only concerned about the implications of the current length of the grass but they are frustrated at the neglect of the area by the state government and Transport for NSW.”
