Two people charged following winery break-ins at Pokolbin

Operation Ferment will continue its investigations into numerous break-and-enters at Pokolbin despite two people being charged this week.

In recent months, at least 27 property offences had been reported to authorities in the area since 1 January.

Of that number, 26 were commercial premises, including several high-profile wineries, and one residential estate.

During the incidents, bottles of alcohol, electronics, jewellery, crystals and gemstones have been allegedly stolen.

It led to officers attached to Hunter Valley PD establishing Operation Ferment.

As a result, police executed a search warrant at a home on Michael Street, Cessnock, about 2pm on Tuesday 10 March.

It’s understood they located and seized several items of interest including crystals and five MDMA tablets.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested, taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with six offences, comprising four counts of aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal.

She’s been formally refused bail to appear before Cessnock Local Court on Thursday 2 April.

Then, about 11am on Thursday 12 March, officers executed a search warrant at a home on Fleming Street, Nulkaba.

This time, they found approximately 4.48g of a crystal substance in clear resealable bags.

A 31-year-old man was arrested, taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal (value less than or equal to $60,000); and possess prohibited drug.

He’s been granted conditional bail to front Cessnock Local Court on Thursday 9 April.

Inquiries under Operation Ferment will resume.
