Two men rescued after boat capsizes off Swansea Heads

Two men in their early 20s have been rescued off the coast of Swansea Heads after their boat capsized just before 9am on Tuesday.

The pair was collected from the water by Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie volunteers near Moon Island on 4 April, after they had managed to make a triple-zero call just minutes before their 5-metre runabout sank.

MRLM Unit commander Jim Wright said motor failure was to blame for the incident.

“As soon as they lost their motor, they knew they were in trouble,” he told the Newcastle Weekly

“They were heading toward the rocks on the south-east side of the island, when they managed to make a call to triple-zero.”

Commander Wright believes the men had been in the water for approximately 20 minutes.

“They said they’d only been out on the boat for about 10 minutes before the motor went, they were out for a fish they told us,” he epxlained.

“It’s pretty deep water out there and if you’re in it long enough it can get fairly cold.”

The two men in the water were picked up by Marine Rescue jetski one by one.

They were then conveyed to the boat ramp near Swansea RSL Club where
waiting Ambulance NSW paramedics assessed the duo.

One of the males has been transported to hospital for further assessment.

“They are very lucky they had life-jackets and that they managed to make an emergency call before their boat went down,” Commander Wright said.

“Particularly given the visibility today.”

The rescue team of five in water-craft and three on radio also deserved thanks, he added.

“Once again the team is to be commended for their swift action.”
