Two men are headed for court after being charged following an alleged copper theft in Newcastle on Thursday morning.
Officers from Newcastle City PD were conducting proactive patrols of landslip-affected homes on Victoria Street, New Lambton, about 1.50am on 26 February.
It was then that they observed a running vehicle parked in the middle of the road.
But, three males allegedly fled on foot when they sighted the police.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle and surrounding area, officers located various tools and a large amount of copper wire.
They also discovered an open telecommunications pit nearby.
It’s understood that was the original source of the copper wire.
Police arrested two men – aged 21 and 42 – a short time later.
They were taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v) and breach of bail.
The pair was granted conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 5 March.
Inquiries are continuing to locate a third man.
