UPDATE: Two in hospital after crash at Sandgate

At about 5.45am today (Monday 9 August), emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Maitland Road and Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Sandgate.

A 31-year-old male driver of a Toyota Hilux and a 63-year-old male driver of a Ford Transit van were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

They were both taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District secured a crime scene which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.

A man believed to be in his 60s is in hospital in a critical condition for serious chest injuries after a crash at Sandgate this morning.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson confirmed emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a head on collision on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Maitland Road just after 5.40am on Monday 9 August.

Three ambulance crews attended the incident, including a specialist medical team which has a critical care doctor and critical care paramedic on board.

There were two patients who required treatment at the scene, the first was a man believed to in his 30s and the second was the male in his 60s.

The first patient suffered minor injuries and was transported to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The other male was taken to the same hospital in a critical condition with the NSW Ambulance specialist medical team.

It is understood the older man had to be pulled from his vehicle by bystanders.

Investigations into the accident are currently underway.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible, exercise caution and follow diversions.

One of the two northbound lanes remains closed with diversions in place at Sandgate and Wallsend roads.

The right turn from Maitland Road into the bypass will also close intermittently.
