Two Hunter men die as HNELHD records 1,115 new COVID-19 cases

The Hunter region has tragically recorded two more COVID-19 related deaths after two men passed away with the virus – a Lake Macquarie man in his 80s and a Singleton man in his 60s.

It comes as the health district discovered 1,115 new cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday.

There are now 22,486 active infections with 101 being cared for in hospital, eight are in ICU.

Locally, Lake Macquarie found the most with 284 new cases while Newcastle added 203.

The Maitland LGA discovered 119 while Cessnock (70), Port Stephens (67), Muswellbrook (23), Singleton (18), Dungog (17) and the Upper Hunter (14) also made the list.

The remaining cases in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) were detected in the Tamworth Regional (114), Mid Coast (69), Armidale (33), Inverell (26), Gunnedah (23), Narrabri (13), Moree Plains (10), Liverpool Plains (five), Glen Innes Severn (three), Uralla (two), Tenterfield and Walcha LGAs.

NSW as a whole reported 20,293 new cases and the deaths of 18 people – six women, 11 men and a child under five.

Aside from the Hunter losses, four people were from south western Sydney, three were from western Sydney, two people were from southern Sydney, two were from Sydney’s inner west, one person was from northern Sydney, one person was from Sydney’s inner city, one person was from eastern Sydney, another was from the Riverina region, and one person was from Penrith.

The child from south western Sydney died at home and had significant underlying health conditions while the man in his 30s died at Prince of Wales Hospital.

There are currently 2,030 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 159 people in intensive care, 47 of whom require ventilation.

Across the state 93.7% of people 16 and older are double jabbed while 78.1% of children aged 12 to 15 have received both doses.

Children aged five to 11 years old are now eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. NSW Health is encouraging parents to make a booking at any of the clinics or with a general practitioner or community pharmacy.
