Two deaths, 1,642 new COVID-19 cases in HNELHD

COVID-19 is continuing to spread in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) after 1,642 new cases were detected overnight.

The region remains the highest contributing district in the state after 10,130 new infections were recorded across NSW.

It comes as 24 deaths – 15 men and nine women – were also reported, including two from the Hunter.

One person was in their 40s, one was in the 60s, five were in their 70s, nine were in their 80s, seven people were in their 90s and one person was aged over 100.

The person in their 40s was not vaccinated and had underlying health conditions.

Eight people had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, nine people had received two doses and seven people were not vaccinated.

Aside from the Hunter, losses were reported in Port Macquarie, Sydney, the Central Coast, Shellharbour, Coffs Harbour, the Northern Rivers, the Tweed Shire and Mid Coast.

There are currently 1,795 cases admitted to hospital, including 121 people in intensive care, 55 of whom require ventilation.

About 45.7% of people aged 16 and older have received their booster COVID-19 vaccination while 44.2% of children aged five to 11 have received one dose.

Of children aged 12 to 15 83.5% are double jabbed.
