A national charity will host its first virtual trivia event this Sunday to help fund vital services as it struggles with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Variety – The Children’s Charity, which has an office in Newcastle, helps thousands of kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs each year.

However, it relies heavily on events to raise funds and has been severely impacted by the restrictions put in place as part of the response to COVID-19.

“Revenue-wise we will see a significant drop this financial year which means we have less funds to support the children and families we help,” Variety – The Children’s Charity NSW/ACT Chief Executive, David Sexton, said.

“Variety of Trivia is a fun way for the whole family to come together and it is suitable for all ages and skill levels.

“It costs $15 per household and the money goes towards helping us continue to provide our vital services.

“It’s a great event to enjoy together while supporting Variety and the work that we do.

“We also have some prizes for the people who are a bit more competitive and want to test their trivia skills.”

Mr Sexton added that, moving forward, the charity was looking at other ways it could raise funds while the COVID-19 restrictions were in place.

He said it was incredibly important to continue working to “help our families, some who need more support than ever during this time”.

“We are confident that there will be an end to the significant restrictions put in place and, once they are lifted, we plan to continue to run the events we have for many years, like the Variety B to B Bash and NSW Bashes,” he said.

“There are a number of ways you can help; you can participate in a fun event like this one or donate to us.

“Donations are always welcome and greatly received – we have had an increase in families looking for support for items like laptops during this time and donations allow us to support them.”

The Variety of Trivia event starts at 5pm on Sunday 3 May.

It is all online and will cover several topics including general knowledge, food and sports, as well as more obscure questions.

The event is guaranteed to be lots of fun for your family.
