Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp described inspirational advocate Sarah Williams as a “trailblazer”.
So, it’s fitting the What Were You Wearing? (WWYW) founder was this week recognised as the 2023 Newcastle Local Woman of the Year.
She joins Lyn Dark (Maitland) and Oana McBride (Swansea) among the Hunter recipients of the prestigious honour, with others to soon be announced within the region.
Ms Williams established WWYW in 2021, first staging a powerful exhibition of the outfits that survivors were wearing when they were assaulted.
Since then, the organisation has gone from strength-to-strength, garnering the support of community leaders and gaining a huge following across the Hunter.
Among many initiatives, Ms Williams has organised rallies attended by thousands of people, campaigned for anti-drink spiking measures, created support kits for sexual assault survivors, organised safe spaces at major events, and provides in-person support to people in the immediate aftermath of their assault.
Ms Williams admitted she was “blown away” by the award.
“Sexual assault and domestic violence statistics are going up, but I feel hopeful that we are making change,” she said.
“I wanted to show survivors that it’s okay to speak out and help them use their voice.
“However, I never thought WWYW would get so big… or I would receive an award like this.
“Little Sarah would be gobsmacked.”
Mr Crakanthorp said Ms Williams was very deserving of the recognition.
“There wasn’t just one nomination that came in for Ms Williams, there were several,” he explained.
“That really demonstrates the impact she has had in our community.
“Personally, I get goosebumps when I hear her speak.
“Her drive and compassion is inspiring – and the achievements of WWYW are testament to that.
“I know that there are even bigger things in the future for both her and What Were You Wearing?”
