Torrential rain forces postponement of Stroud’s whackiest event

SHARE

The inclement weather has claimed its first major event with organisers postponing Stroud’s annual Brick and Rolling Pin Competition this weekend.

Australia’s whackiest extravaganza, just north of Newcastle, was scheduled to take place on Saturday 9 July.

However, with Tocal recording 119mm of rain between Sunday and Monday alone, and more expected over the coming days, the decision was taken out of the committee’s hands.

“It’s obviously disappointing but we were left with no other choice,” a spokesperson said.

“We met at the weekend to inspect the condition of the grounds.

“Everyone unanimously decided the Stroud Showground wasn’t brick-throwing ready.

“So, the new date is Saturday 20 August.”

Organisers are now looking ahead to next month for a day filled with chuckers galore, as well as chockers of activities and entertainment.

Watch the men bowl a brick weighing five pounds (two-and-a-bit kilograms), while women launch a two-and-a-half pound rolling pin (1.1kg) and the kids catapult a rubber chook in an attempt to be crowned the 2022 biggest tosser.

Aside from the fun and community camaraderie this event provides, Stroud Showground will be bursting with market, craft and food stalls, plus much more, for every family member.

Pulling for a return is the ever-popular tug-of-war, the fast and furious post splitting and wood chop.

Crafty locals will exhibit more than 60 magnificent handmade quilts – all up for critique by the people’s choice award.

For the “littlies”, there’ll be time to shape and squish sand like they’ve never done before, in hands-on sculpting workshops throughout the day.

In the dedicated children’s space, they can enjoy face painting, amusement rides, a variety of games as well as the girl power antics of Hunter Heroes.

For the rev heads, United Ford Owners Club will unleash an impressive collection of 150 cars, providing a walk down memory lane for Ford lovers.

Local organisation Rattlin’ Moans and Engine Groans will roll into town with one of the best displays of vintage tractors in the region, along with the Newcastle Restored Vehicles Club, California Crusin’ Car Club and ANZAC’s Motorcycle Club.
