For many people, the Christmas season is a time of indulgence. Lots of catch-ups with friends and family, as well as all those work functions. If we are not careful, they can take a toll on our health, especially that waist line.
While we do want to be jolly, we certainly don’t want to end up with a stomach like the jolliest one of all, Santa.
So, this week I’m going to offer my top five tips for surviving the ‘silly season’.
- Indulge. Yes, that’s right but make it worthwhile by eating those foods or treats that you really like and keep an eye on portion sizes. Don’t just eat junk because it’s on the table.
- Alcohol plays a big part for most Australians at Christmas time. If limiting your intake is not an option, then make every second or third drink a glass of water. If you’re a big beer drinker, look for some low carb options.
- Earn your indulgences. I tell my clients the secret is to “bookend” those splurges with eating light, healthy meals and plenty of water. For example: If you know Christmas Day is going to be huge then you should eat as healthy as possible the day before, along with some exercise. On Boxing Day, get up and go for a walk and hold off as long as possible (Intermittent fasting) before getting stuck into those Christmas leftovers.
- Christmas Day activity. Go for a walk. Get involved if the backyard cricket game is on. Play with the kids/grandkids and their new toys.
- Relax and breathe. Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a stressful time. Issues like financial restraint, family dynamics or even striving for perfection tend to become more amplified under the glare of the Christmas spotlight.
Religious beliefs aside, Christmas is just another day on our calendar.
Go with the flow, work with what you have and remember: there is always someone worse off, so be grateful.
