Three swim centres in Lake Mac to reopen next week

Swimmers in Lake Macquarie are set to make a splash at three of the region’s swim centres when they reopen next week.

In line with the NSW Government’s COVID-19 health rules, the Swansea and Speers Point sites will welcome residents back on Monday 27 September while Morisset Swim Centre will also reopen from Thursday 30 September.

The pools will initially open between the hours of 9am and 4pm.

Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Leisure Services Brad Sutton said he was excited for people to return to the sites as warmer weather approached.

“We’ve received a number of requests from the community about opening our swim centres, but unfortunately the previous public health order prevented us from doing so,” Mr Sutton said.

“We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust whenever and wherever required to ensure our pools comply with health guidelines and are safe and enjoyable venues for everyone.”

Leisure Operations Coordinator Paul Stone added he was proud of the efforts of staff.

“Coordinating the reopening of our swim centres while maintaining a COVIDSafe environment is a complex task, made possible by dedicated, passionate staff,” he said.

“We’ve worked through the new COVIDSafe plan, which was released by the NSW Government yesterday afternoon (23 September), and we are excited to be able to open our doors from Monday in accordance with a number of new requirements.”

If visiting a swim centre, users are asked to:

  • check the council’s website for opening hours
  • maintain 1.5 metre physical distance from all people including staff
  • wash or sanitise your hands upon entry and regularly after that
  • follow the centre’s signage and conditions of entry along with staff directions
  • come swim-ready
  • remember to wear a face mask when not in the water (this includes all outdoor areas)
  • Check in with the QR code.

“Please do not attend if you are unwell or have any signs of cold or flu, including a cough, sore/scratchy throat, runny nose, shortness of breath or fever,” Mr Stone said.

“If staff observe any of these symptoms, you will be asked to leave immediately.”

Charlestown Swim Centre will unfortunately remain closed until November while maintenance works are completed on the 25 metre and 50 metre pools.

West Wallsend and Toronto swim centres will also remain closed, with the easing of restrictions only applying to outdoor pools.
