Three new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the Hunter region in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday night.

Two of the infections are in Lake Macquarie and the other case is in Cessnock.

A detection in Whitebridge was infectious in the community, so was the case in Cessnock and the infection in Edgeworth is still under investigation.

One of the cases is linked to an existing cluster.

Across the Hunter, seven people are currently being cared for in hospital, with one case in ICU.

The new cases take the total number in the current outbreak to 182, with 102 still active.

It comes as NSW recorded 1,290 infections and four deaths overnight.

A man in his 50s from Dubbo died at Dubbo Hospital.

Another man in his 70s died at Westmead Hospital and a woman in her 60s also died at this hospital.

A man in his 70s from Sydney’s inner west died at Concord Hospital.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said vaccination was the key moving forward.

“While it is important for us to reduce case numbers, we know the greatest way to do that is getting vaccinated – vaccination is the key in terms of our freedom and reducing the spread of the virus,” she said on Monday.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant echoed the premier’s thoughts.

“The vaccines work, they are highly effective they help you from passing it on to other people that you love,” she said.

“I urge everyone to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, access across the state is increasing.”

Anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath, is urged to immediately get tested. Even people with mild symptoms, such as fatigue, new muscle aches or pains, a change in taste or smell or a new runny nose, should arrange testing as quickly as possible.
