The Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) recorded three new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

Two were detected in the Maitland LGA, with each of them in the same household.

Their source of infection is being investigated, however both were infectious in the community.

The other, from the Newcastle LGA, is linked to the Costco cluster.

It brings the total number of cases in HNELHD to 173 since 5 August.

HNELHD also announced a pop-up testing clinic was open at Windale, on the corner of South and Lake streets, this weekend.

It will be accessible between 8am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, 28 and 29 August.

Meanwhile, weddings are expected to be permitted from 12.01am on Friday with up to five guests allowed.

It comes as NSW registered a further 1,035 cases as of 8pm on Friday 27 August, bringing the total number to 23,183 since the start of the pandemic.

Sadly, two people who had COVID-19 died.

A woman in her 70s from Sydney’s Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District passed away at Nepean Hospital, after acquiring her infection there earlier this month.

Hers is the fourth death linked to an outbreak at the hospital.

A woman in her 80s from western Sydney died at Westmead Hospital, too.

NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard also claimed there was a “lot of misinformation” on social media about the vaccine, particularly targeting people who want to have children.

It suggested there were some negative aspects of being vaccinated in terms of fertility, he said.

“I just want to confirm that the most senior health advisory service in Australia has confirmed absolutely, that there is no evidence whatsoever that a woman’s fertility or a man’s fertility would be in any way affected by having the vaccine,” Mr Hazzard stated.

“Young women and girls who are contemplating having a child should understand that if they don’t have the vaccine, and they do get the virus, they may suffer from long COVID or from symptoms that would actually make it more difficult to be able to have children, and to have as many children as they would like.”

It remains vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact, isolates and is tested immediately.

There are more than 410 testing clinics open across NSW.
