Newcastle locals Melissa Histon and Justine Russell alongside Cessnock’s Nadine Hickey have been nominated for awards that acknowledge their vital work in the community.

The Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards shine a light on the enormous contribution of women in both urban and rural communities across the state.

Ms Histon and Ms Russell were both nominated for the Urban Inspirational Woman over 30 award while Ms Hickey is in the running for the Rural over 30 honour.

As CEO of Got Your Back Sista Ms Histon was recognised for her work helping women experiencing domestic violence, Ms Hickey is in the spotlight for her hundreds of hours of volunteering and Ms Russell has been honoured for her dedication to local youth.

“Each and every finalist is fully deserving of recognition for the tireless and generous work they do in their communities,” NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women Bronnie Taylor said.

“They give so much and ask for nothing in return and I congratulate them on their nomination.”

The nominees were announced virtually this morning after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of an event at Parliament House in Sydney.

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales congratulated all of the finalists.

“These awards provide an important opportunity to recognise the achievement of women across NSW, who without fanfare go out of their way to make a difference to the lives of others,” she said during the announcement.

“I acknowledge all of the 2021 nominees, each of you was identified by a member of the public as someone who had contributed to making your community a better place to live.”

The Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards winners will be announced at an award ceremony on Sunday 19 September.
