Thoroughbreds give Denman devil of a time

SHARE

The Scone Thoroughbreds claimed their third consecutive victory at the expense of the Denman Devils in Bengalla Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League at the weekend.

Following a surprise loss to the Singleton Greyhounds in round two, the 2019 premiers have maintained that winning momentum ever since.

And, Scone struck immediately against the Devils.

Within the opening minutes, Justin Apthorpe capitalised on an Adam Clydsdale pass near the line to score for a 4-0 lead.

Soon after, Josh Adams dived over following a smart backline movement. Jake Watts converted to extend the margin to 10-0.

Watts then backed up some good work near the tryline, touching down and adding the extras for 16-0.

Just before the break, Jared Austin crossed in the corner for a 20-0 scoreline at half-time.

The Devils eventually hit back early in the second period to trail 20-4.

However, that’s as close as they got to the Thoroughbreds.

Clydsdale grabbed his second of the afternoon in the 60th minute, which Watts converted for 26-4.

Austin also posted a double, thanks to a nice pass from Adams.

Watts made no mistake with his shot at goal for 32-4.

Luke Clydsdale then crossed under the posts shortly after the kick-off and Watts made it 38-4.

To wrap it up, Ryan Hawkshaw followed up a quick interchange of passes to Watts, backing up, for his second try.

He put the icing on the cake for a 44-4 triumph.

In the other first grade match, the Greyhounds beat long-time rivals Muswellbrook Rams 30-20 while the Aberdeen Tigers had the bye.
