Charlestown local Wendy Evans has accomplished more than most in her lifetime, despite living with cerebral palsy.
And, with too many achievements to count, the inspirational woman decided to compile her life story into a memoir titled This Is Me.
Over the past few years, she used an iPad to write about the many obstacles she’s faced and how she overcame them with flying colours.
As Ms Evans told the Newcastle Weekly, the piece serves to show others the power of persistence.
“For a person with cerebral palsy, I have done so much in my life, and I wanted to share with my readers the stories and different stages of my life,” she said.
“So many things are different from when I was born and young to the present.
“Almost anything is possible when you are determined with or without a disability.”
A notable achievement within the book is her success in the sport of sailing.
Through local organisation Sailability Toronto, Ms Evans has ventured across the globe, representing her country on numerous occasions.
In 2017, she was the first person with a severe disability to sail solo around Lake Macquarie.
She completed the mission in a specially modified Hansa 303 dinghy.
Ms Evans has even gone as far as to write her own song about the sport, titled In a Little Boat, which is available for viewing on YouTube.
Other triumphs featured in her memoir include working as a teacher’s aide for children with cerebral palsy, representing Australia in South Korea for the accessible sport boccia, as well as carrying the Olympic torch at the 2000 Sydney Games.
She wants people to be inspired by what she’s achieved and to look for opportunities within their own lives.
“I hope that others with disabilities and their parents will learn that anything is possible if you set your mind to it,” she said.
“I also hope people without disabilities might learn not to judge a person by their disability but to get to know them and learn about some of their achievements in their life.”
She has sold more than 100 copies of the book, which is now available online for purchase at InHouse Publishing.
