Think you’re lucky enough to win a $20 million lottery?

Michael, Marie, Matthew, Matilda – whatever your name is, if it starts with the letter “M” you’re more likely to win the lottery than anyone else.

In fact, in the 12 months to 31 December 2021, players with the first initial M won 10.6% of all division one wins across all lottery games.

This was a changing of the guard as such, given that the letter J had snagged the most division one wins in both 2019 and 2020, dropping to 9.64% in 2021.

The Rebeccas, Roberts, Raymonds and Rachaels are not far behind, with the initial R taking home 8.12% of the division one wins last year.

The statistics are all thanks to chance giant The Lott, who delved into last year’s data to uncover first name initials, gender and age group trends among its division one winners across all lottery games in 2021.

For players with the first initial A or D the message is don’t lose hope, as 2021 saw both accounting for 7.87% of all wins.

The same cannot be said for the Uriels, Xaviers and Zanes of the world, with no one with a name starting with the letter U, X or Z winning a division one lottery prize in 2021.

And there was also only one division one winner each with an initial starting with F and Q.

When it comes to age, players in their 60s won the most major lottery prizes in 2021, taking home more than 30% of wins.

Players aged in their 50s and under however, took home almost half of all division one wins (48.12%).

And just one player each in their 90s and 100s took home a division one win in 2021.

Finally, the numbers on gender show more than 61% of division one winners were males last year.

As The Lott prepare for this weekend’s $20 million Superdraw, spokesperson Ally Ramsamy says regardless of data, anyone with a ticket is in with a chance.

“Regardless of your name, birth date, or gender, anyone with a Saturday Lotto ticket in their hands before the draw’s close this weekend has a chance to win a share of the prize.

“The only sure thing is that Saturday Lotto is a game of chance that gives you the possibility of becoming a division one winner in every draw!

“In March’s $20 million Superdraw, 16 entries took home division one, each enjoying a prize of $1.25 million.

“Among this group, 12 players became overnight millionaires – which is what Superdraws are known for – making multiple millionaires! The remaining four entries were syndicate entries.

“We can’t wait to see who wins division one in this weekend’s $20 million Superdraw Saturday.

“For anyone buying an entry, I recommend that you register your entry to a player card or online account. This means your prize is secure, and I can give you a call with the life-changing news if you’ score division one.”

The $20 million Superdraw Saturday, draw 4257, is on Saturday 7 May.

Tickets can be purchased at any licenced lottery outlet, online from or via The Lott mobile app.

The official home of Australia’s lotteries, The Lott operates and markets Australia’s leading lottery games customers know and love creating everyday winners, winning every day.

In 2021, more than 130.8 million winners took home more than $3.79 billion in prize money.

Last financial year, Australia’s official lotteries contributed more than $1.5 billion via state lottery taxes and donations to help community initiatives.
