The Very Popular Theatre Company scoops pool at CONDAs

The Very Popular Theatre Company (TVPTC) scooped the pool at the 44th annual City of Newcastle Drama Association (CONDA) awards at the weekend.

Theatre-lovers from across the region gathered at Newcastle City Hall on Saturday 10 December to celebrate the event, affectionately known as “Theatre Christmas”.

And, it was no surprise to see TVPTC’s offering, Jersey Boys, which played a three-week season in the Civic Theatre – breaking box office records, claim most of the spoils.

It walked away with eight accolades.

In addition to taking home Best Musical Production, Jersey Boys also received awards for direction, music direction, ensemble performance and lighting design.

Another big winner on the night was Hunter Drama’s Seussical the Musical.

That show picked up four plaudits, including Excellence in Audio-Visual, Multimedia and Projection (Daniel Stoddart), Excellence by a Performer 18 and Under in a Supporting Role – Musical (Layla Schillert), Excellence by a Performer 18 and Under in a Lead Role – Musical (Anaiya Mahony) and Excellence by a Choreographer (Lauren Harvey).

The prestigious Legacy Awards went to Betty Burns, Michael Wiltshire and Noel Grivas.

The CONDA for Best Dramatic Production was awarded to Her Productions for its inaugural play Uncle Vanya, which performed at The Lock-up in May, directed by Charlotte De Wit and Marigold Pazar.

Fittingly, Stoddart – the man behind Jersey Boys and Seussical the Musical – snared this year’s highest honour, Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to Theatre.

“Daniel is a performer, director, tutor, designer, producer and published playwright,” CONDA president Dr Shane Bransdon said.

“His companies, Hunter Drama and The Very Popular Theatre Company, generate training opportunities and employment for our region.

“In fact, the entire local theatre industry is bursting with talent.

“The outstanding quality of work produced throughout the region in 2022 resulted in a record 176 nominations.

“So, the CONDAs brought everyone together to celebrate this achievement.

“We also made some significant changes to the awards ceremony this year, providing a meal option as well as moving the ceremony from the Civic Theatre to Newcastle City Hall to allow more social interaction for guests throughout the evening.

“But, it would not have been possible without the generous support of CONDA’s highly-valued sponsors, who we graciously thank.”
