Red dresses, green eyeshadow, Kate Bush and Heathcliff.
If you’ve ever dreamed of dancing in the park to an ethereal soundtrack with other like-minded fundraisers, then learning Newcastle’s The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever is returning to King Edwards Park next month should be music to your ears.
This is an annual flashmob event that attracts thousands across the globe.
Created to celebrate Kate Bush’s 1978 hit Wuthering Heights (originally a novel written by Emily Bronte in 1847), the dance has seen a resurgence in popularity since the song appeared on the Netflix series Stranger Things in 2022.
Now generations of the musician’s fans gather, donning their best red frocks, to “fulfill the yearning for frolicking, wistful, pure, unadulterated fun”.
This year’s event will be staged at King Edward Park on Saturday 10 August at noon.
After a six-minute tribute to Heathcliff and Cathy’s intense love, dedicated “Kates” are being encouraged to stay behind to enjoy a picnic and conversation.
“This is a part of a worldwide explosion of flashmobs celebrating the inventive dance and wonderful music of Kate Bush singing about the famous novel,” say event organisers.
“[It is] inspired by Shambush in the UK and the global event idea of Sam Wareing in Berlin.
“We fundraise for a women’s charity each year – and this year will donate to Warlga Ngurra refuge.
“The event will be fun for all.”
First hosted in Newcastle in 2017, The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever has grown in numbers every year.
After a compulsory hiatus during COVID, it has returned to the city’s hilltop beachside park and now boasts one of the largest attendance numbers in Australia.
“Finesse your red frock, practice your green eyeshadow and prepare a flower for your hair and neck and get ready to dance on the wily, windy moors of King Edward Park.”
