The Burwood Inn owners count cost of devastating fire

The owners of The Burwood Inn are counting the cost of a blaze, which ripped through the historic Newcastle hotel on Tuesday morning.

About 9.54am on 20 June, more than 40 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) personnel responded to the incident at the almost 150-year-old pub on Berner Street.

Thankfully, the inferno was brought under control in less than half an hour, however much of the damage had already occurred.

From early indications, the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of the Burwood Inn.

It quickly spread to the nearby restaurant, bar, beer garden and storage areas.

The site has now been handed over to NSW Police who will investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The efforts of firefighters prevented major structural damage and spared the accommodation and front bar facilities from being impacted by fire,” a FRNSW spokesperson said.

“Crews have continued to douse hotspots and monitor for potential fire spread through radiant heat.

“Fifteen people were evacuated while firefighting operations took place… and there have been no reports of injuries at the scene.”
