THE BIG WET: Road closures in Cessnock, Maitland and Singleton LGAs

SHARE

While the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Hunter, the region’s thoroughfares are also copping a battering.

Roads in Cessnock City, Maitland City and Singleton LGAs have been closed, due to the heavy rain, with the threat of more downpours later on Friday 4 March.

Rainfall of up to 200mm has already hit the Hunter today, causing moderate to major flooding of the river system, with Gloucester, 120km north of Newcastle, most at risk.

A spokesperson for the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) reiterated the message people should never drive, ride or walk through floodwater.

“It’s sad we have to, continually, say this,” he said.

“But, we’re often amazed motorists still attempt to drive their vehicles though floodwater.

“It is just not on.

“It puts their lives at risk and that of the SES personnel, too.

“People need to be aware of driving hazards such as mud, debris, damaged roads, fallen trees and branches.

“If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, storm drains, low-lying areas and floodwaters.”

If your life is at risk, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

For SES assistance, phone 132 500.
