In a sad aftermath to a tragic weekend, a teenage boy has been charged following a fatal crash, which claimed another teen’s life, at Salt Ash.
About 10.45pm on Friday 5 July, emergency services were called to Lemon Tree Passage Road.
On arrival, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District found a white Ford Falcon sedan, containing five young people aged 14-to-17, had left the roadway and struck a tree.
Heartbreakingly, despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance Paramedics and first responders, a 16-year-old boy died on the way to hospital.
Three other passengers, one aged 14 and two 17, were taken to John Hunter Hospital for various non-life-threatening injuries.
The L-plate driver, another 17-year-old, was subjected to a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a positive result.
He was conveyed to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing and further assessment.
Upon his release on Sunday 7 July, the youngster was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with learner not accompanied by driver, negligent driving (occasioning death) and special category driver drive with special range PCA.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 19 August.
