Teenage e-scooter rider killed in alleged hit and run


In tragic news overnight, a local teenager has died following an alleged hit and run in Lake Macquarie.

It’s since been revealed police arrested a 21-year-old man at a Maryland home.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday 29 July, officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District were called to Macquarie Road at Warners Bay, about 800m north of the Medcalf Street intersection.

It came after reports of a crash, which occurred about 5.30pm on Friday 28 July.

On inspection, officers found an electric scooter nearby and a teenage boy unresponsive down an embankment.

Sadly, the youngster died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Police established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, the 21-year-old was arrested about an hour later.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Wednesday 13 September.

The man’s licence has been suspended, too.
