Teen charged following Maitland crash that hospitalised motorcyclist

Police have charged a teenager following an accident at Maitland this week, which left a motorcyclist seriously injured.

Emergency services were called to The Long Bridge on High Street, after a white Toyota Hilux utility and a motorbike collided, about 6.15am on Tuesday 5 November.

The rider, a 58-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District then arrested the driver of the ute, a 16-year-old boy.

He was taken to hospital under police guard for medical treatment and mandatory testing.

After a crime scene was established, officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) began an investigation.

About 8.45am on Wednesday 6 November, they attended the hospital where they charged the youngster with two counts of negligent driving; take and drive conveyance without consent of owner; never licenced person drive vehicle on road; drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous; dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm; cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle; and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court via a bedside hearing.
