Teen charged after skateboarder hit by car at Bar Beach

An 18-year-old has been charged after a skateboarder was hit by a vehicle in a park near Newcastle last week.

About 9pm on Friday 21 June, police were called to a recreational area on Greenslope Street, at Bar Beach.

It followed reports a male had been struck by a utility.

Officers were informed he was skateboarding on the park grounds before he was hit by a vehicle, which allegedly left the scene.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 54-year-old skateboarder before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

Police from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit – assisted by Newcastle City Police District – established a crime scene and began inquiries into the incident.

Following a search of the local area, they located and seized a Nissan Navara.

About 11am on Saturday 22 June, a teenager was arrested at Newcastle Police Station.

He was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, operate vehicle so driving wheel/s undergo loss of traction, and destroy or damage property.

The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 11 July.
