Talented Hunter teens shine in short film competition

SHARE

A number of talented Hunter teenagers’ names are up in lights after shining brightly in an inaugural short film competition.

Secondary school students from across NSW shared what democracy meant to them in “Parli-Flicks”, which was launched by the Parliament of NSW to celebrate International Day of Democracy on 15 September.

St Joseph’s College Lochinvar pupils Catarina Fara, Lilia McKellar, Demi Cant, Emily Pockett and Logan Culley demonstrated impressive creative skills to become a finalist in the Best Senior Secondary Short Film (Years 10-12) category.

Other standouts included Joshua Sutton, Francesca McRae, Finlay Keegan and Samuel Williams (Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus) in the Best Regional Short Film; while Emily Taliana and Brooke Hooler (Cranebrook High School) prevailed in the Best Metropolitan Short Film section.

The overall winner was Rhys Hibbert (St Ives High School), who also claimed Best Junior Secondary Short Film (Years 7-9).

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the students were unable to travel to Parliament House to be handed their awards in person.

So, Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison attended St Joseph’s College Lochinvar on Monday 6 December to congratulate the local youngsters.

She also presented them with their medals and certificates.

“The competition offers pupils an opportunity to create their own visions of what democracy means to them,” Ms Aitchison said.

“So, I could not be any more prouder of the St Joseph’s College Lochinvar students.

“Initiatives like Parli-Flicks are vital to our democracy.

“They give young people the chance to share their ideas on the very system of government they live in.

“I am very impressed to see our concept of democracy interpreted in so many innovative ways by pupils from right throughout NSW.”
