Take a step back in time at Macquarie Pier

SHARE

Travel into the past from the time of the dinosaurs, through to war years and up to modern-day with a new audio tour at Macquarie Pier.

As one of Newcastle’s most iconic locations, the site is rich in history offering everyone the chance to learn about the city while taking in the beautiful scenery.

All you need to enjoy the audio tour is a pair of headphones and a device that can read QR codes.

It is complemented by 10 interpretative signs jam-packed with interesting information.

Visitors can read as they listen to the stories and sounds that cover everything from the volcanic activity 300 million years ago that created Nobbys-Whibaygamba Headland to the shelling of Newcastle by a Japanese submarine that entered the harbour during the war.

Port Authority of New South Wales CEO Philip Holliday said the project was about giving back to the people who live, work and enjoy the areas we operate around the Harbour.

“It’s been terrific to collaborate in developing this immersive audio tour and informative signs packed with historical facts and photos – we hope others love it as much as we do,” Mr Holliday said.

The 900 metre reconstructed walkway provides a perfect path for a walk with energetic kids for a wander through history or a bike ride to burn off energy.

Macquarie Pier is also perfectly positioned to take a dip at Nobbys Beach when you’re done.
